Work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Clients and Communities

This course describes the knowledge and skills required by a worker, new to primary health care, to work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Straits Islander clients and their communities.

It enables the individual worker to understand the cultural and historical context surrounding issues facing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities in order to support the delivery of primary health care. The course applies to all staff, providing support to the delivery of primary health care or learners, wishing to be employed in primary health care.

Award issued:

  • participants who are deemed competent upon completing all course requirements (theory and practical assessments) will receive a Statement of Attainment in:
    • HLTAHW001 Work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities

Course requirements:

  • all participants must have a moderate level of English to be able to complete the course

Course duration:

  • 8 hours face-to-face

Assessment requirements:  

Participants will be provided with an assessment workbook, which contains the theory assessments and details of the practical assessments

  • the theory assessment consists of multiple-choice quizzes
  • the practical assessment consists of practical exercises, workplace-based scenarios
  • Topics included in the assessments:
    • Use culturally safe and appropriate communication (verbal and body language) with clients
    • Show respect and treat information confidentially
    • Demonstrate respect for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, their histories and cultures
    • History of primary health care and community-controlled health
    • Impact of government policies and legislation on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
    • Rights and responsibilities of clients and workers
    • Code of conduct
    • Challenges and issues for local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, which may impact on delivery of services

  • Work in a culturally safe manner
